Here you can find insurance packages for your cruise. Applicable to all trips up to 45 days. Please choose between:

  • 5-Star-Premium (incl. travel health insurance)
  • 4-Star-Comfort (excl. travel health insurance)

A detailed list of insurance benefits is offered below ("benefits"). The correct premium depends on the sum of all travel prices of your travel booking.

Cruise means all kind of trips on the water as cruises, river cruises, sailing trip, charter. In case of combined trips (cruise + further services), premiums for cruises are applicable if at least 1/3 of your journey is spent on board ship. Otherwise, cheapter premiums for flight trips can be booked.

Nile Cruises, "Blue Cruises" (Turkey), ferries and house boats always can be insured by cheaper premiums for flight trips.

You will easily find the right premium for your journey by taking these hints:

  • This is an insurance package for cruises offered in different versions. Compared with 5-Star-Premium, the 4-Star-Comfort doesn´t include travel health insurance.
  • It is applicable to any travel booking with a maximum duration of stay of 31 days.
  • Definition of cruise: All kinds of trip on the water (e.g. cruises, river cruise, sailing trip, charter) except of Nile Cruise, "Blue Cruises" (Turkey), ferries and house boats (they can be insured by cheaper premiums for flight trips).
  • In case of combined trips (cruise + further services), premiums for cruises are applicable if at least 1/3 of your journey is spent on board ship. Otherwise, cheaper premiums for flight trips can be booked.
  • This travel insurance can be booked by everybody. The insurer is HanseMerkur Reiseversicherung AG.
  • There is no age limit.
  • Definition of family: 1 or 2 adults + children up to 21 years of age, living in a joint household.
  • The correct premium to insure your trip depends on the total travel price of your journey. If you have made several bookings with different service providers for your trip, please add up all prices to find the correct premium.
  • booking period: At any time until 30 days before departure. Within 3 working days, if travel booking was made 30 days or closer to departure.

This is a summary of the major benefits in a short version. The full terms & conditions, which are binding for your insurance coverage, can be downloaded from the right side (see: online-booking).

A. travel cancellation insurance (cancellation before departure)
benefits:

  • refund of cancellation costs according to the service provider´s or tour operator´s cancellation conditions in case of cancellation before departure due to an insured event (see below)
  • refund of additional costs for your outward journey (max. up to costs of cancelling the trip), if your trip starts later than scheduled due to an insured event (see below)
  • refund of additional costs for your outward journey (max. up to costs of cancelling the trip), if your trip starts later than scheduled due to delay of public transport of at least 2 hours and if you miss your booked and insured flight because of this delay.

insured events (reasons for cancellation):

  • unexpected severe illness
  • death
  • accident
  • inability to take immunization (excluded: failure of immunization, lack of adequate antibody value)
  • pregnancy (if not already medically diagnosed at the time of insurance booking)
  • fracture of prostheses (excluded: dental prostheses)
  • essential damage to properties (burglary, natural disaster) of at least 2,500 €
  • unemployment due to compulsory redundancy (file for unemployment)
  • reemployment
  • (voluntary) job change
  • repeat examination at a university, college or school during of within 14 days after the insured journey time
  • failed moving up (if the insured journey was a school trip)
  • unexpected draft, reserve duty training exercise or civilian service
  • unexpected illness, accident or inability to take immunization of a dog also booked for the journey

B. travel interruption (break) insurance (full or partly interruption / break of journey)
benefits:

  • in case of premature break (termination): refund of additional costs for return travel as well as refund of travel price (100 % whithin first half of the trip, max. first 8 days; proportional when breaking later)
  • in case of interruption at your holiday resort: refund of travel services not used, additional costs for catching up a round trip or cruise
  • in case of late return travel: refund of additional costs for return travell
  • additional hotel costs (max. 2,500 €, max. 10 days), if a fellow traveller is not transportable due to accident or illness and therefore unable to travel back as scheduled 

insured events (full or partly interruption / break):

  • unexpected severe illness
  • death
  • accident
  • inability to take immunization (excluded: failure of immunization, lack of adequate antibody value)
  • pregnancy (if not already medically diagnosed at the time of insurance booking)

applicable to A + B:
deductible
: If cancellation becomes neccessary because of illness treated only outpatient, there is a deductible of 20 % (25 € at least). If cancellation becomes neccessary because of any other insured event (also: illness treated in-patient): no deductible.

pre-existing conditions: If an illness is already existing at the time of insurance booking, insurance coverage also for this illness is only given, if this illness hasn´t been medically treated due to acute medical conditions within 6 months before insurance booking (routine examination unconsidered ).

co-insured relatives:
Cancellation of your ticket also is insured, if you have to cancel due to one of these insured events occuring to your relatives: unexpected severe illness, death, accident, unability to take immunization, pregnancy, fracture of prostheses.

relatives: spouses, partner of a cohabitation, children, adopted children, stepchildren, fostered children, parents, adoptive parents, step-parents, foster-parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, grandchildren, parents-in-law, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brothers-in-law. Additionally, but only in case of death: aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces.

fellow travellers:

  • Up to 4 persons travelling together are insured between themselves - whether or not they related to each other.
  • In case of more than 4 persons travelling together, only relatives are insured among each other.

C. travel health insurance
costs of medical treatment abroad:

  • outpatient medical treatment
  • in-patient medical treatment
  • unpostponable surgery
  • ambulance service for in-patient medical treatment
  • medication, bandaging material
  • medical appliances (if becoming neccessary due to an accident)massages, medical dressings, inhalations and physiotherapy (max. 300 € per trip)
  • painkilling dental treatment, including simple fillings and measures of restoring the function of existing dentures
  • medically indicated treatment during pregnancy due to acute medical condition, medically induced abortion
  • insurance coverage of € 50.000 for newborn babies in case of premature birth (up to 36. week of pregnancy)
  • medically prescribed radiation, light and other physical treatments
  • X-ray diagnostics

follow-up treatment abroad:

  • if travelling back to home country as scheduled is not possible because the insured person is unable to be transported due to medical reasons, insurances benefits will be provided abroad until the insured person can be transported back home

return transport, repatriation and funeral costs:

  • medically reasonable return transport to the nearest hospital in the home country of the insured person (if return transport is medically reasonable, will be decided by the contractual physician of the insurer in consultation with the treating physician abroad)
  • although medically not necessary, additional costs of return travel will be covered, if the in-patient treatment abroad will last for at least 14 days and/or costs of medical treatment abroad will exceed costs of a return transport
  • costs of an insured fellow traveller accompanying the insured person, if it is medically necessary, ordered by authorities or required by the transport company
  • additional costs for return travel by any common available means of transportation (lowest class), if in-patient treatment lasts for more than 3 days
  • transportation of the deceased to the permanent place of residence (max. 10,000 €)
  • funeral costs abroad (up to the amount of transport costs to the home country)

limitation of insurance coverage:

  • foreseeable expenses (regular purchasing of medicine, regular check-up’s eg.)
  • normal health care during an uncomplicated pregnancy (unexpected complications covered)
  • treatment by spouses, parents or children

D. emergency insurance:

  • no deductible
  • search, salvage and rescue costs up to 5,000 €
  • in-patient stay: compensation of hotel costs (max. 2,500 €, max. 10 days) for fellow travellers of the insured person, if the journey is a round trip or cruise or if the stay abroad must be prolonged because the insured person can not be transported due to medical reasons    
  • if a stay in hospital exceeds 5 days and is not yet finished: traveling costs (outward and return journey) for an on-site visit of 1 related person      
  • organization of repatriation to the home country of the insured person or funeral abroad (only organization costs)     
  • organization of the return transport to the home country in case of death, accident or severe illness of the insured person, fellow travellers or relatives (only organization costs, full coverage of costs for medically reasonable return transport is a benefit only of the health insurance)
  • kidnapping of the insured person or a fellow traveller: loan up to 10,000 €
  • care for under-aged children having to continue or break the journey due to accompanying persons having suffered death, accident or severe illness      
  • assistance to find a lawyer abroad as well as loan (max. 3,000 €) for lawyer, court and/or interpreter   
  • assistance and costs of replacement of stolen or lost identification documents abroad      
  • assistance in blocking of credit cards or debit cards

E. accident insurance:

  • no excess
  • payment of an indemnity in case of death or invalidity as a result of an accident during the journey (death: 20,000 €, invalidity up to 40,000 €, cosmetic operation: 5,000 €)
  • search, salvage and rescue costs, transport of the insured person to hospital or to place of permanent residence (if ordered by a doctor, up to the amount insured)
  • also insured: passengers of an airplane crash and sports accidents (except  of parachuting/skydiving, training and participation in motor vehicle events)
  • also insured: office job, teaching, administration, tour guide

F. luggage insurance:

  • no deductible
  • insurance coverage for personal baggage at its time value during your journey
  • insurance coverage during the entire journey (leaving the permanent residence until return back
  • checked-in baggage, stored baggage (e.g. airline, ship, hotel) insured against loss, damage, destruction during that time
  • during the remaining travel time personal baggage is insured against damage, destruction by criminal act, means of transport accident, fire, thunderbolt, explosion, storm, flood, landslide, earthquake, avalanche
  • non-delivery of baggage at destination (at least 1 night later): purchase of neccessary items (except valuable articles) up to 500 €
  • also insured: laptop, photo & film equipment, mobile phones, portable DVD player (only hardware)
  • also insured: souvenirs, presents purchased during the trip
  • also insured: sports equipment (if not in intended use)
  • valuable baggage (laptop, photo & film equipment, mobile phones, portable DVD player, jewellery) is only insured, if it was in personal safekeeping or locked up in a room or hotel safe
  • not insured: cash, prepaid cards, cheques, credit cards, identity cards, documents, certificates, art objects, dental gold
  • baggage in motor vehicles and watercrafts: valuable baggage is not insured; remaining baggage insured from 6 to 22 h of during stops of max. 2 hours; during the remaining time, if invisibly locked up in a boot or cabin
  • baggage on official camping sites: insurance coverage only from 6 to 22 h in case of theft or robbery, if stored in a locked tent (excluded valuable baggage, if not in personal selfkeeping)

Please consider the following information in the event of damage:

  • In the insured event, please make your cancellation at the airline, travel agency or tour operator without undue delay in order to keep cancellations costs as low as possible. Additional cancellation costs will not be refunded, if you wait and see if your journey might be possible in the end.
  • If you have to cancel due to unexpected illness, please see a doctor at first who has to state your incapability to travel. There is no insurance coverage, if you first cancelled your booking and then visited a doctor later on.

In the event of damage, the following documents must be sent to HanseMerkur: copy of the travel confirmation or invoice, insurance policy, your full address and bank account details (incl. IBAN and BIC/SWIFT). In addition and depending from the damage event, the following documents are to be submitted:

  • all original booking and cancellation document
  • the doctor´s documents showing diagnose and dates of treatment (illness)
  • death certificate in the event of death
  • in the event of unemployment: written compulsory redundancy and file for unemployment benefit
  • in the event of reemployment: written confirmation of the employer stating the start of the employment contract
  • in the event of (voluntary) job change: written statements of old and new employer also stating the employment probation
  • in the event of repeat examination: written confirmation of the university, college or school stating the failed examination as well as date of repeat examination
  • in the event of draft, reserve duty training or civilian service: written confirmation of the authority

  • Depending on kind of damage event, various costs can be refunded: additional costs for return travel in case of premature or late return travel, refund of travel services not used due to an interruption of your journey, refund of travel price.

  • If you have to cancel due to unexpected illness, please see a doctor at first who has to state your uncapability to travel. There is no insurance coverage, if you first cancelled your booking and then visited a doctor later on.
  • In case of premature or late return travel due to an insured event we recommend to contact your travel agency, tour operator or insurer HanseMerkur to agree the neccassary steps to do and to make any possible changes in bookings comfortable for you.

In the event of damage, the following documents must be sent to HanseMerkur: copy of the travel confirmation or invoice, insurance policy, your full address and bank account details (incl. IBAN and BIC/SWIFT). In addition and depending from the damage event, the following documents are to be submitted:

  • You can consult any doctor or hospital available at your destination (free choice). A prior coordination with HanseMerkur Reiseversicherung AG is not necessary.

  • In any case, a medically reasonable return transport will exclusively be arranged by the emergency call center in co-operation with the doctor / hospital in charge at the destination.
  • Outpatient treatment must be prepaid by the insured person. Please request written diagnostic analysis, the doctor´s bills, receipts and prescriptions. They can be produced in any language or currency.
  • If in-patient treatment is necessary, please immediately contact HanseMerkur. It is possible to arrange direct billing between the hospital and HanseMerkur. Please keep your policy number ready when calling the emergency phone number (country code for Germany usually +49)-180-5256256 (charges from foreign countries plus 0,14 €/min when calling by landline number or 0,42 €/min by mobile phone)

  • If you prefer to submit your claim already while on journey, we recommend to send all documents through an international courier service in order to avoid the risk of loss of documents.

  • As cases of emergency always are reported immediately to the emergency service center, which will take over and deal with the case, there is no specific damage notice.

  • Documents (reports) concerning damage events can be produced in other languages than German as well as in other currencies than €.
  • Damage caused by criminal acts (e.g. theft, robbery): please report to the local police without undue delay and submit the original documents to HanseMerkur when making your claim.
  • Damage caused during transportation (flight, coach, ship): please report to the transport company without undue delay, ask for a written confirmation (e.g. damage or loss report) and submit the original documents to HanseMerkur when making your claim.
  • Damage caused during a hotel stay (also youth hostel or other kind of accomodation): please report to the management without undue delay, aks for a written conformation and submit the original documents to Hansemerkur when making your claim.
  • If you have booked a package tour: please report to the local tour guide or representative, ask for a written confirmation of your report and submit the original documents to HanseMerkur when making your claim.
  • In the event of damage, the following documents must be sent to HanseMerkur: copy of the travel confirmation or invoice, insurance policy, your full address and bank account details (incl. IBAN and BIC/SWIFT).
  • Additionally to the documents listed above, you have to submit original receipts of the stolen or damaged pieces of luggage especially in case of valuable baggage being affected (e.g. laptop, photo or film equipment, mobile phones, portable DVD player, jewellery).
