Applicable to all flight bookings of any duration of your journey. Insurance coverage for cancellation of your flight before departure due to an insured event - e.g.:

  • unexpected severe illness
  • unemployment or reimployment
  • repeat examination
  • revocation of a confirmed semester, traineeship or seminar abroad
  • illness or death of a fellow traveller or relative

You will easily find the right premium for your ticket by taking these hints:

  • The flight ticket cancellation insurance is a cancellation insurance especially and only for flight bookings.
  • It is applicable to any flight booking (ticket) and any duration of your journey.
  • It is not required to be a student. The STA Travel flight ticket cancellation insurance can be booked by everybody. The insurer is HanseMerkur Reiseversicherung AG.
  • There is no age limit.
  • The correct premium to insure your ticket depends on the maximum possible cancellations costs of your ticket + possible booking fees. If you also wish to insure the risk of flight tax not being refunded by the airline in case of cancellation, please add the amount of tax when calculating the premium.
  • booking period: At any time until 30 days before departure. Within 3 working days, if flight booking was made 30 days or closer to departure.

  • refund of cancellation costs according to the airline´s cancellation conditions in case of cancellation before departure due to an insured event (see below)
  • refund of additional costs for your outward journey (max. up to costs of cancelling the ticket), if your trip starts later than scheduled due to an insured event (see below)
  • refund of additional costs for your outward journey (max. up to costs of cancelling the ticket), if your trip starts later than scheduled due to delay of public transport of at least 2 hours and if you miss your booked and insured flight because of this delay.

insured events (reasons for cancellation):

  • unexpected severe illness
  • death
  • accident
  • inability to take immunization (excluded: failure of immunization, lack of adequate antibody value)
  • pregnancy (if not already medically diagnosed at the time of insurance booking)
  • fracture of prostheses (excluded: dental prostheses)
  • essential damage to properties (burglary, natural disaster) of at least 2,500 €
  • unemployment due to compulsory redundancy (file for unemployment)
  • reemployment
  • (voluntary) job change
  • repeat examination at a university, college or school during of within 14 days after the insured journey time
  • failed moving up (if the insured journey was a school trip)
  • unexpected draft, reserve duty training exercise or civilian service
  • unexpected illness, accident or inability to take immunization of a dog also booked for the journey
  • unexpected written revocation of a confirmed semester, traineeship or seminar abroad by the responsible organization (if confirmed in writing at the time of insurance booking)
  • first-time and full-time employment contract after end of study or school within 3 months after termination of study or school

pre-existing conditions: If an illness is already existing at the time of insurance booking, insurance coverage also for this illness is only given, if this illness hasn´t been medically treated due to acute medical conditions within 6 months before insurance booking (routine examination unconsidered ).

co-insured relatives:
Cancellation of your ticket also is insured, if you have to cancel due to one of these insured events occuring to your relatives: unexpected severe illness, death, accident, unability to take immunization, pregnancy, fracture of prostheses.

relatives: spouses, partner of a cohabitation, children, adopted children, stepchildren, fostered children, parents, adoptive parents, step-parents, foster-parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, grandchildren, parents-in-law, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brothers-in-law. Additionally, but only in case of death: aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces.

fellow travellers:

  • Up to 4 persons travelling together are insured between themselves - whether or not they related to each other.
  • In case of more than 4 persons travelling together, only relatives are insured among each other.

Please consider the following information in the event of damage:

  • In the insured event, please make your cancellation at the airline, travel agency or tour operator without undue delay in order to keep cancellations costs as low as possible. Additional cancellation costs will not be refunded, if you wait and see if your journey might be possible in the end.
  • If you have to cancel due to unexpected illness, please see a doctor at first who has to state your incapability to travel. There is no insurance coverage, if you first cancelled your booking and then visited a doctor later on.

In the event of damage, the following documents must be sent to HanseMerkur: copy of the travel confirmation or invoice, insurance policy, your full address and bank account details (incl. IBAN and BIC/SWIFT). In addition and depending from the damage event, the following documents are to be submitted:

  • all original booking and cancellation document
  • the doctor´s documents showing diagnose and dates of treatment (illness)
  • death certificate in the event of death
  • in the event of unemployment: written compulsory redundancy and file for unemployment benefit
  • in the event of reemployment: written confirmation of the employer stating the start of the employment contract
  • in the event of (voluntary) job change: written statements of old and new employer also stating the employment probation
  • in the event of repeat examination: written confirmation of the university, college or school stating the failed examination as well as date of repeat examination
  • in the event of draft, reserve duty training or civilian service: written confirmation of the authority
  • in the event of first-time and full-time employment contract after end of study or school: written statements of the employer also stating the employment probation
  • in the event of unexpected written revocation of a confirmed semester, traineeship or seminar abroad: written confirmation and revocation issued by the responsible organization
